## Definition

A memecoin is a token built around a joke, image, or community rather than a specific product. Some memecoins have grown into large markets in their own right, while others spike briefly and collapse.

Most memecoins are highly speculative. They can be entertaining and they can be expensive lessons. Position sizing, not picking the right one, is what tends to keep people from getting hurt.

Memecoins may still count as regulated securities or commodities depending on how they are sold, despite their joke origins.
